2012 American Cup

The American Cup took place in San José, California, this past weekend and it was great. Me and my teammate Osvaldo Augusto “Queixinho” took 1st place in our weight classes. We usually fight in the same weight class, but this time, he moved up to Lightweight so we could try to score more points and eventually win the team trophy, WE MADE IT! I won the Featherweight division where I had two fights and submitted both of them while Queixinho won his match in the Lightweight division by points. In general, our team did really good and we got 1st place overall in the adult division.

Next, Long Beach Spring Open on May 12th! Oosssss

San Francisco International Open 2012

The first edition of the SF International Open was great, one more high level tournament by IBJJF.
For my first tournament of the year I think it was a great experience. Unfortunately with so many black belts in this area, on my weight class there were only me and my teammate Osvaldo Queixinho, so we closed out the division and signed up for the open class. On my first fight I went against the runner up champion of the super heavyweight and it was a very close match where I won by referee’s decision after the fight ends with 2 points each. The finals was also a great match where I lost by points to the middleweight champion.
In general I really liked my performance, not only for taking silver in the Absolute Division, but because I did feel really good in my matches and I look forward to my next competition, the Abu Dhabi Pro trials in New York.

2011 Worlds No-Gi

Samir Chantre takes bronze at the 2011 Worlds No-Gi.

For the first time in three years Samir doesn’t make until the finals. Coming from injure and with not enough time to recover, Samir trained for a week for one of the most prestigious no-gi event of the year, ” I don’t care if I lose, this tournament is only once a year, I won’t miss this opportunity, even though if I have to compete in the weight above the one I’m used to”.  says Samir

In the first match Samir Chantre faced a guy from Check Mat/AKA and submitted in less than 2 minutes by armbar. The second match was a really good match against the champion of last year, Samir put a show of attacks including sweeps and submissions but your opponent was very smart in defend the whole match after getting 2 points for what the referee called a takedown and kept this same score until the end. “The fight was great, I showed everybody here that I wanted to fight the whole time, a lot of people thought I’ve won because I was the only one fighting, after he got 2 points he didn’t move at all, only defending himself. I got him in lots of uncomfortable positions such as sweeps, back attack, foot locks, armbar and omoplata  but he was skilled enough to scape. Great fighter and a very humble guy. Next year I’ll be back stronger and better prepared to get my title back! ” Says Samir.
